Ingredients
2 1/4 tsp of active dry yeast, or 1 package of yeast
1/2 C warm water
1/2 C shortening
1/2 C sugar
1 egg
3 t salt
1 1/2 C water
Preparation
In one bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water.
In another bowl, cream the shortening and sugar. Add this concoction to the yeast and mix. Add an egg to this and mix well.
In another bowl, mix salt and flour together. Then add this flour mixture and water alternatively to yeast mixture until the dough is not sticky Be sure to watch this. stop adding flour when the dough no longer is sticky. you don’t want your bread too dry. Anywhere between 6 and 8 cups is usually good Cover this with towel and put in warm place and let rise for 3-4 hours.
After mixture has doubled, punch down bread and knead. Form dough into small loaves on a floured board. Place in buttered loaf pans, let rise again until doubled.d
Bake at 350 degrees F until brown, (c) 20-30 minutes. Brush with melted butter.
