Ingredients

1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick)

2 1/2 cups flour (sifted)

1 T. baking powder

1 t. salt

1 cup plus 2 T. cold buttermilk

1 T. melted butter

Preparation

Heat the oven to 475 degrees. Cut the butter into small cubes and freeze for 15 minutes. Stir the dry ingredients together in a large bowl. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles a coarse meal. Stir in the buttermilk using a fork just until the dough forms. Knead 3 to 4 turns on a lightly floured surface and pat into a rectangle. Cut out biscuits using a 3 inch cutter. Gather the scraps until all the dough is used. Place the buscuits 2 inches apart on a baking pan. Brush the tops with melted butter. Bake on the top shelf of the oven for 16 to 18 minutes. Serve warm or room temperature.
