Ingredients

¼ cup packed brown sugar

¼ cup shortening

¼ cup margarine or butter, softened

½ teaspoon vanilla

1 egg yolk

1 cup all-purpose flour

¼ teaspoon salt

1 egg white

1 cup finely chopped nuts

About ½ cup jam or jelly, any flavor

Preparation

  1. Heat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Mix brown sugar, shortening, margarine, vanilla, and egg yolk in large bowl, can use mixer on medium to low speed.
  3. Stir in flour and salt.
  4. Shape dough into 1 inch balls.
  5. Beat egg white slightly with fork.
  6. Dip each ball into egg white then roll in chopped nuts.
  7. Place about 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet.
  8. Press thumb deeply into center of each.
  9. Bake about 10 minutes or until light brown.
  10. Quickly remake thumbprints with end of a wooden spoon if necessary.
  11. Remove cookies from cookie sheet.
  12. Fill thumbprints with jam or jelly while cookies are warm.
